Celebrating World Physical Therapy Day: Stories of Dedication and Healing
Every year, on September 8th, we celebrate World Physical Therapy Day to honor the dedicated professionals who help us move better, feel better and perform as our best selves. Physical therapists and occupational therapists guide us through recovery, pain management, and mobility improvement, enabling us to lead fuller, healthier lives.
In this blog, we feature three Spooner team members and physical therapists who have made a huge impact in their communities. Through their stories, we explore what motivates them, the challenges they face, and the satisfaction they get from helping others move better and feel better.
Can you share a story about a time when you really made a difference in a patient’s life?
Abigail Burger, PT, DPT, Spooner Avondale Clinic Director: “I treat patients who are experiencing a variety of symptoms related to pelvic health. I can think of one patient in particular who had been experiencing chronic pelvic and abdominal pain for years, had been through multiple surgeries, and who was unable to work or hike with her family. With the help of my technician, we challenged her every session to do a little bit more than she thought she was capable. Four months later at the end of her treatment, she had returned to all of her activities. She had more energy, smiled more and displayed more confidence in herself. I’m proud of the hard work she put in and am happy to be a small part of encouraging our patients to go beyond what they thought was possible for themselves.”
What’s the most rewarding part of being a physical therapist for you?
Sara Gagliano, PT, DPT, CLT-UE: “As a physical therapist primarily working with patients who have had breast cancer, the most rewarding part is helping those patients get back to feeling like themselves, during and after their treatments. Seeing patients feel better, reach their goals, and get back to being active is amazing, especially when you know they have gone through one of the hardest times in their lives. They are so grateful and uplifting to work with.”
Why did you choose physical therapy as a career, and what keeps you passionate about it?
Ryan Bell, PTA, FAFS, Spooner North Mesa Clinic Director: “I chose physical therapy because of my passion for serving others. I am fascinated by the human body and our unique ability as movement professionals to restore an individual’s quality of life. I remain passionate about the profession due to the ever-evolving techniques and treatment strategies that can be developed throughout my career to help patients reach their goals and improve their overall health.”
In celebrating World Physical Therapy Day, we’re reminded of the powerful impact physical therapists and occupational therapists have on their patients’ lives. Their passion for helping others and dedication to improving quality of life through movement make a real difference every day, inspiring people to live stronger, healthier lives.
