Ron had a stroke in January 2020 and started working with Caralyn at the end of October 2020. In recognition of Stroke Awareness Month, we are excited to spotlight Spooner Peoria’s Caralyn Debash, PT, DPT and her patient Ron.

Stroke Awareness Month

When asked why physical therapy is important for patients who have suffered a stroke, Caralyn explained, “Physical therapy is so important because it restores their confidence and safety within their home and the community! Whether it be learning to modify a specific movement, or relearning the motor task itself such as walking, standing, transfers, it is so beneficial to get them moving again, and showing them that they can!”

Caralyn has been able to see firsthand the positive impact physical therapy can have for her patients who have suffered a stroke. After Ron’s stroke at the beginning of 2020, his left side of his body was greatly affected. She says, “He came into his first session thinking he may never walk again, and is now standing independently, and walking laps in and out of cones with his walker.”

Ron recently left a handwritten letter at the front desk expressing his gratitude and progress. His note led us to learn more about his story and his experience so far with Caralyn and the rest of the Peoria team.

Ron’s letter said: “Anna, Caralyn, Richard, Myisha, Ivan, and everyone else thank you so much for all you do here in therapy and for always going above and beyond to help me reach my goal of a somewhat independent life in my own home. It is much appreciated, you guys and girls are the best! I never imagined when I first rolled in here that I would be making the progress I have, all thanks to the wonderful staff here at Spooner! God bless all of you! From being stuck in my wheelchair, to taking steps, to even doing squats now, thank you very much. I can now see I still have a chance at getting back close to where I was physically before my stroke. Amazing to say the least!”

Caralyn says, “Ron is one of the most hardworking, driven and motivating patients we have had the opportunity to work with. His response of “Sooo good!” every morning when asked how he is doing, surely brightens our day. He brings laughter and positivity to every session, making all of his successes that much more enjoyable to watch. We couldn’t be more proud to be a part of his journey!”

Richard, a physical therapy technician at Spooner Peoria, has had the chance to work directly with Ron throughout his treatment. Richard says, “Ron has been a genuine pleasure to work with. His progress he has made here is amazing, and it’s a privilege to be part of it. I love seeing him stronger, more confident, and taking steps forward (literally, and metaphorically). He has a great attitude and sense of humor, which makes his therapy all the more fun. I am honored to be a part of the progress he has made.” Richard is heading off to physical therapy school later this month so we wish him luck and will miss him around the clinic!

Caralyn offered some words of encouragement and says to anyone who has suffered a stroke: “Stay positive and stay patient! Small victories are still victories! They add up and it is so rewarding to watch their progress and see how proud of themselves they are.

Ron, thank you for the thoughtful letter and for sharing a glimpse of your story with us. We can’t wait to continue to see the progress you make with the Peoria team!
